Merry Christmas, happy holidays, seasons greetings; we hear the words all through the last days of November and December. So what do they mean? Well obviously the spirit of giving and spreading good will comes to mind. While this should be applied to everyday living, one place we often over look is our own community of filmmakers. Spreading goodwill and the spirit of giving should be an everyday thought to each of us. Ask yourself. "how can I make my community better?"
I think a better question is, “what did I do today to make my film community better?” We all believe that what we do affects us on a personal level and that may be true, but what we do, or don’t do affects us as a community as well. Let’s think about that for a few minutes.
Let’s take your current film project; you had to find funding, a crew, editors and post sound/color and when you were finished you had to find distribution or some way of getting your film out to the masses and then hopefully making your money back so you can pay back your investors so they will feel good about giving you more money for the next project right? I think we’re all familiar with this process so again I’ll ask you; what did you do today to make our film community better? You see, there is a Studio system, a “Hollywood” Indie system and there’s Our system, a truly independent system. If you think about the word independent that mean we’re outside of the Studio and Hollywood way of doing things which includes funding and distribution. These two factors are what power our industry and then the last factor, marketing, would be what steers it.
Iflixtv is here to facilitate the distribution of your film today, but we’d like to serve our community in the other two factors, Funding and Marketing. Both of these take capital. Cash-Money and a consistent stream of it. So what are we doing to help our community? I’ll tell you it doesn’t take much if we do it together. There are 698 people following the iflixtv page, 1,272 people in the Atlanta Actors Facebook page, there are 3,045 in the Atlanta Filmmaking Facebook page, there are 2,321 people in the Atlanta Film Industry Facebook page, there are 8,846 people in the Film Producers and Directors Facebook page and 8,199 people are following the Atlanta Get Connected page. That’s a total of 24, 381 people in just a few Facebook groups and pages.
If each one of us donated $5 right now that would make $121,905.00. So could you make your film for this amount? If you couldn’t I’m sure you have a film that you can make for this amount. Now let’s say we all did the same thing each month; a hundred and twenty-one thousand dollars could by you 40,000 units (DVD) and a national television ad campaign for one month promoting your release. You could make $360,000 from kiosks (i.e. Redbox) alone. I’d like for iflixtv to award a full Production through Distribution deal to an indie producer every 60 days that has put together a professional and detailed package and I challenge you to donate $5 before the end of the year so that is possible. As a community we can support each other and create our own ecosystem where we find, fund and film our short and feature length films! Just think, what we'd all be a part of; an independently, self sustaining entity where we create our own entertainment. Oh, and I'm not talking just "Festival Films" I mean studio quality films with well-known celebrities playing the characters you created!
Over the next few days and then every month after that lets all do what we can to keep our industry, the indie filmmaking industry alive. iflixtv needs your help, your brother and sister filmmakers need your help and you need your help! You can use the link below to make your donation and after you’ve done that ask yourself, “when is the last time I volunteered on a film project?” We all need help at sometime and we all have time to help at some time and volunteering on a production (as a crew member or an actor) that is not your own is a great way to build new relationships and strengthen our community. I hope we can all put forth a small effort to building a community of filmmakers and film supporters starting now!
